Written by

Fish tagine, as it is called in Lebanon is often served as an appetizer in the meza course of the meal. It is served with toasted or fried pita. It makes use of the abundant fish that is caught in the Mediterranean. The creaminess of the tahini sauce combined with the sweetness of the caramelized onions are complimentary to the fish. Ingredients 3 pieces fillet Tilapia (or any white fish) 3/4 cup tahini paste 1/4 cup lemon juice 1/4 cup yogurt 1 tbs minced garlic 1/4 cup water 1/4 tsp dried cilantro(corriander leaves) 1/2 tsp salt 1/8 tsp cayenne pepper 1/4 tsp black pepper 1/2 cup flour 1/2 tsp salt 5 tbs olive oil 2 tbs butter 1 cup sliced onions 1/2 cup toasted pine nuts 2 tbs fresh chopped parsley pita chips Directions To make this wonderful dish you need to start by making the sauce. In a bowl mix together the tahini paste, lemon juice, yogurt, garlic, water, cilantro, 1/2 tsp salt, cayenne pepper, mix well then set aside. In a deep dish or bowl mix flour and 1/2 tsp salt, drench fish in flour then in a shallow sauce pan, heated to medium heat, add olive oil then brown fish on both sides, or about 2 minutes on each side. Place fish in a casserole dish and pour tahini sauce over it, place in 450 degree preheated oven for 15-20 minutes or until sauce is bubbling. While the fish is cooking, in a shallow pan, saute the onions in butter for 10 minutes over medium heat until brown caramel color, then set aside. When fish is done cooking, top it with the sauteed onions, pine nuts and parsley and serve with pita chips.

hello, i would not advise using milk, it does not work well with the lemon juice and garlic.
By: dedemed
can you put milk instead of water?
By: theskiizcrying
Tilapia is not that expensive at all, you can use any white fish for this and and it should work out fine :)

YUM Dede! That looks so good! Thanks for sharing this one! I usually use Tahini, water and lemon juice mixed in a bowl and use that as my fish dip or replacement for tartar sauce. It's way better than tartar sauce in my opinion! YUM! <3 Dig :X XOXOX

Hello, the whole yogurt/fish issue is actually a myth. Your friend may have had bad fish or bad yogurt, but the mixture of the two really doe not cause any indigestion. But if you want to be cautious, yes, you can eliminate the yogurt and just add some more lemon juice and water. Also the cooking process would eliminate any issue that the yogurt would cause :) Happy cooking!

Thanks for the recipe, but a friend of mine got food poison from mixing dairy (Yogurt) and fish together, So I never do that I don't eat any dairy products for 8 hours after eating fish. But the recipe sounds delicious could you leave out the yogurt?

There are sooo many great Fish and Fish cookeries in the Med. I must try this. Never cooked fish using this method before. Your husband may not like fish, but he sure is very good producer and camera man! Thanks and much success. And fun. PS, my Father (80y/o) is a native of Detroit., as are his (deceased) Parents.
